Club Fair Opens Eyes and Minds at Wantagh Middle School
There are at least two dozen reasons to stay at Wantagh Middle School after the last bell rings each day. Those reasons were on display at the inaugural club fair on Oct. 9, an afterschool showcase of an extensive extracurricular program.
Tables were set up representing a wide variety of clubs, and all sixth, seventh and eighth graders were invited to attend. Students could find ways to express themselves creatively, explore academic interests and do community service. The fair had a large turnout, with many students finding numerous clubs they plan to join.
“I think it’s great,” sixth grader Gianna Hosek said. “There’s so many fun options.”
Gianna wants to get involved in student council, the Class of 2031, Art Club, Home and Careers Club and Eco Warriors. When asked how she will make time for all of these, she enthusiastically answered, “I’ll figure it out.”
Principal Anthony Ciuffo walked around the gymnasium with a microphone announcing each club. Tables were staffed by advisers and existing club members. There was also a QR code at each booth for students to scan to get more information.
Assistant Principal Rachel Quattrocchi, who came up for the idea for the club fair,
explained that involvement in extracurricular activities can have a positive impact on students in a variety of ways. Clubs give students the opportunity to explore hobbies, talents and interests outside of the traditional classroom environment, while increasing social connections and forming new friendships. Students also develop skills such as time management, collaboration and confidence.
“We have so many great clubs that we offer at Wantagh Middle School,” Ms. Quattrocchi said. “There’s something here for everyone.”
Students could ask questions but also had a chance to experience the clubs. They played video games at the eSports Club booth, did sample recording at Podcast Club, drove a robot made by the Robotics Club, witnessed a Science Research Club chemistry experiment and got a sneak preview of an upcoming planting activity at the Eco Warriors table.
“The club fair is a great way to showcase all of these amazing opportunities,” Ms. Quattrocchi added. “When you look at something on a sheet of paper, it’s different than seeing it in action.”
