Important Library Information

The mission of the Wantagh Middle School Library and Librarian is to provide information access to all students and staff. The Librarian works to ensure students acquire the skills to select, evaluate and use information appropriately and effectively.


The Librarian:

  • Provides direct instruction on research skills and information and digital literacy skills like evaluating, using and creating information
  • Develops a collection of materials, in a variety of formats, to support and complement classroom instruction
  • Supports students in learning and practicing skills for their future college and/or career
  • Hosts a safe, welcoming space for all

GENERAL/HOMEWORK

  • Info Please Kid's Almanac provides biographies, a daily almanac, and information on science and technology, history, world and U.S. news, arts and entertainment, countries, and more.
  • Fact Monster, produced by Information Please, provides homework help, a dictionary, an atlas, an almanac, timelines, and an encyclopedia.
  • Multnomah County Public Library Homework Center concentrates on K-12 homework-related sites. Includes web resources that are reviewed by librarians.
  • Sponsored by Discovery Education, this site covers subjects like world languages, health, math, research, science, social studies, technology.
  • PBS Learning Center offers free access to thousands of innovative, standards-aligned digital resources.


SPECIALIZED/RESEARCH

NovelNY –  The New York Online Virtual Electronic Library is available 24/7, providing a wide variety of resources like books, magazines, newspapers, research and reference sources.

THE ENCYCLOPEDIA MYTHICAAn encyclopedia of mythology, folklore, and legends for many cultures.

THE NEW TIMES LEARNING CONNECTION provides news summaries, a web navigator, resources and lesson plans for teachers, links to The New York Times Upfront and discussion guides for parents.

THE NEW YORK TIMES is an online version of current and archival news articles.

Loans

  • Books can be checked out for 2 weeks and can be renewed. 
  • Overdue notices are sent to students in advisory. Report cards may be held back until all books are returned and/or lost books are paid for.


Computers

  • Computers are to be used for school related work only.


Passes

  • Students may come to the library with a pass:
    • during morning advisory, with permission from their advisor.
    • independently, throughout the day, with the permission of the librarian and instructor.
    • during lunch periods, with the librarian's permission.


Homework Central

  • Homework Central is an after school program in the library for students wishing to study, do homework, or work on group projects until 3:45 pm, Tuesdays - Fridays. There is a late bus schedule available.

NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED.

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS WHILE IN THE LIBRARY.
